Hood River Lavender Farms | Hood River, Oregon

Let’s just address it upfront: the sky was not cooperating.
Wildfire smoke had rolled into the Columbia River Gorge overnight, and by the time Olivia and Quinton pulled up to Hood River Lavender Farms, the air had that distinctive amber tint that every PNW person now recognizes immediately. They were stressed — understandably so. They’d been planning this session for weeks, picked the location specifically for those sweeping Gorge views, and now the whole thing looked like Oregon was doing its best impression of a sepia-toned postcard. And you couldn’t even see
I told them what I tell every couple when the weather doesn’t show up the way we planned: trust me, and let’s just shoot.
Spoiler: they’re really glad they did.

Here’s the thing about a location like Hood River Lavender Farms — it doesn’t need a perfect sky to be stunning. The lavender rows run long and purple across the hillside with views toward Mt. Hood, and on any given day it’s already one of the most picturesque spots in the Gorge. It’s the kind of place that photographs itself.
What the smoke actually did — and this is the part Olivia and Quinton didn’t expect — was soften everything beautifully. Harsh midday sun? Gone. Unflattering shadows? Also gone. In their place: this warm, diffused, golden-hour-but-make-it-cinematic light that wrapped around them for the entire session. The lavender practically glowed. Everything felt quieter and more intimate than it would have on a bluebird-sky summer afternoon.
Once they saw the first few shots on the back of my camera, the stress pretty much evaporated.

Olivia and Quinton turned out to be naturals once they loosened up — wandering through the rows, laughing at themselves, forgetting to be self-conscious. That’s the thing about engagement sessions: the location sets the stage, but the couple makes the photos. And these two, stressed or not, were genuinely fun to be around.
By the end of the session they were fully converts to the “smoke is actually kind of beautiful” camp. I’ve added a few of them to that club over the years.

If you’re eyeing Hood River for your engagement session — and you should be, it’s one of my favorite shoots in the entire PNW — here’s the honest truth about summer light in the Gorge: it’s rarely “perfect.” It’s smoky or windy or both, the light changes fast, and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.
Hood River Lavender Farms is gorgeous during peak bloom, typically late June through mid-July, but the farm and surrounding area hold up beautifully into early fall too. A few quick tips if you’re going:
Give yourself the last 90 minutes before sunset. The Gorge light moves fast. That’s your window.
Wear something that plays with the landscape. Dusty neutrals, warm terracotta, sage, soft denim — anything that doesn’t fight the purple. You’ll thank yourself later.
It’s a very easy day trip from Portland. About an hour out, and Hood River has great spots for dinner after. Make a whole evening of it.

You two showed up stressed and left with some of your favorite photos — which is honestly one of my favorite outcomes. Thank you for trusting the process and going with it. Wishing you nothing but blue skies on your wedding day, but if a little smoke rolls in, you already know you’ll be just fine.
