You’ve found a photographer whose work makes your heart skip a beat. Their Instagram is stunning, their website feels like you, and you’re already imagining your gallery. But before you send that deposit, there are a few important questions every couple should ask before booking a wedding photographer in Vancouver, WA.
We’re telling you this not just as Wedding Photographers ourselves, but from people who spent months looking for our own Wedding Photographer for our wedding.
Booking the right photographer isn’t just about the photos — it’s about trusting someone to be with you all day, in some of the most intimate moments of your life. The right questions will help you find someone whose style, personality, and process are the perfect fit.

It sounds obvious, but it’s always the first question to ask. Vancouver and the greater Portland-metro area book up fast — especially on Saturdays between May and October. Many photographers only take a limited number of weddings per year, so don’t wait too long to reach out once you’ve found someone you love. Most couples in the Pacific Northwest book their photographer 12–14 months in advance.
Experience at your specific venue is a huge bonus. A photographer who has worked at your venue already knows where the best light is, which backgrounds are most flattering, where to position you during golden hour, and how to navigate any lighting challenges inside the venue. If they haven’t been there, ask if they plan to do a venue walkthrough beforehand.
Vancouver, WA and the surrounding area has a wide variety of venues — from rustic barns and vineyard estates to sleek event spaces along the Columbia River — and each one presents its own unique opportunities and challenges.

Every photographer has a unique approach. Some are primarily documentary and candid, hanging back to capture moments as they unfold as flies on the wall. Others lean more editorial and posed. Many are a blend of both. Ask the photographer to describe their style in their own words, and make sure it matches what you’re envisioning for your gallery. Not sure how to describe what you want? Put together a pinterest board of shots that you love and any photographer will let you know what we call your style in the ‘biz’.
Do you want bright and airy? True-to-color and warm? Dark and moody? Ask to see full galleries — not just highlight shots — so you can see how they handle different lighting conditions, indoor receptions, and quieter in-between moments throughout the day.
Experience matters. An established photographer has navigated countless unexpected moments — a sudden rain shower, a timeline running behind, a dark reception hall — and knows how to adapt without missing a beat. That said, newer photographers can be incredibly talented and may offer more competitive pricing. Ask about their experience level and how they handle challenges when things don’t go as planned.
Make sure you understand exactly what you’re getting before signing a contract. Ask about:
Don’t be afraid to ask for a detailed breakdown. A great photographer will be transparent and happy to walk you through everything.

You’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than almost anyone else — including most of your guests. Their energy and personality will directly affect how relaxed and comfortable you feel, which shows up in your photos.
Do they direct you confidently, or do they prefer to observe and capture? Are they calm under pressure? Do they have a sense of humor when things get stressful? Ask this question and pay attention to how they answer — it tells you a lot about what your experience will be like.
This is a question couples often forget to ask, but it’s one of the most important. What is the photographer’s backup plan if they have a personal emergency on your wedding day? Do they have a network of trusted photographers they work with? Is there any backup plan written into the contract?
A professional photographer will have an answer for this. If they don’t, that’s a red flag.
This is one of the most overlooked questions couples ask — and one of the most important. Not every photographer operating in Vancouver, WA is running a legitimate, professional business. Before you hand over a deposit, it’s worth doing a little due diligence.
Liability insurance is a big one. Many wedding venues in the Vancouver and Portland area actually require vendors to carry general liability insurance before they’re allowed on the property. Beyond venue requirements, insurance protects both you and the photographer if something goes wrong on the day — an accident, damaged equipment, or an unforeseen incident. A professional photographer will carry it without hesitation.
Business registration is another green flag. A photographer who has taken the time to formally register their business is one who is serious about what they do. It signals professionalism, accountability, and staying power — you’re not handing your wedding day over to someone who might disappear before delivering your gallery.
Reviews and reputation matter too. Look for a consistent track record of happy clients on Google, Facebook, The Knot, Zola, WeddingWire, or Instagram. A few glowing reviews are nice, but a pattern of them over time tells a much deeper story. Pay attention to what couples say about the experience, not just the final photos — communication, reliability, and how the photographer made them feel on the day are just as telling as the images themselves.
When you’re investing in wedding photography, you deserve to work with someone who treats their business with the same care and intention they bring to your photos.
Ask how many photos they typically deliver, and what kind of editing is included. Do they do basic color correction, or is their editing more extensive? Do they offer album design or additional retouching services? Understanding their editing style will help you know what to expect when your gallery arrives.
Also ask about their turnaround time. Most photographers deliver final galleries within 6–12 weeks after the wedding, but this varies. If you have a hard deadline (like wanting photos before a honeymoon trip or holiday cards), be upfront about that.

Anyone can put together a stunning highlight reel from their best 30 shots. But what you really want to see is a full gallery from a real wedding — from getting ready all the way through the reception. This gives you a much more realistic picture of what to expect.
Look for consistency in editing, variety in the shots throughout the day, how they handle low-light situations, and whether the in-between candid moments feel natural and authentic.
This is a great question to ask — and most photographers will love you for it. It shows that you’re a collaborative partner, not just a client. You might learn that they need a detailed timeline in advance, a list of formal family photos you want, or just 15 minutes of alone time with you as a couple during sunset.
Great wedding photography is a partnership. When you set your photographer up for success, everyone wins — and your gallery will reflect it.
Finding the right photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your wedding planning journey. The photos are what you’ll have long after the flowers have wilted and the cake has been eaten — they’re how you’ll remember the way it felt.
